The Path towards X-ray Free-electron Lasers
نویسنده
چکیده
At present, the linac-based SASE process is the most promising approach to reaching x-ray wavelengths with a free-electron laser. In the Self-Amplified-SpontaneousEmission process the spontaneous radiation is amplified in the single pass of an electron beam through an undulator, and no mirrors are required. This is an essential requirement for x-ray FELs, since the reflectivity of mirrors decreases at wavelengths lower than ~1500 Å and optical resonators become impractical at short wavelengths. The FEL radiation is also easily tunable by changing the electron beam energy.

A simplified description of X-ray free-electron lasers
It is shown that an elementary semi-quantitative approach explains essential features of the X-ray free-electron laser mechanism, in particular those of the gain and saturation lengths. Using mathematical methods and derivations simpler than complete theories, this treatment reveals the basic physics that dominates the mechanism and makes it difficult to realise free-electron lasers for short w...

We have investigated multiphoton multiple ionization dynamics of xenon atoms using a new x-ray free-electron laser facility, SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) in Japan, and identified that Xe(n+) with n up to 26 is produced at a photon energy of 5.5 keV. The observed high charge states (n≥24) are produced via five-photon absorption, evidencing the occurrence of multiphoton a...
متن کاملFirst Milestone on the path toward a table-top free-electron laser (FEL)
Latest developments in the field of laser-wakefield accelerators (LWFAs) have led to relatively stable electron beams in terms of peak energy, charge, pointing and divergence from mmsized accelerators. Simulations and LWFA theory indicate that these beams have low transverse emittances and ultrashort bunch durations on the order of ∼10 fs. These features make LWFAs perfectly suitable for drivin...

متن کاملProposal to generate an isolated monocycle x-ray pulse by counteracting the slippage effect in free-electron lasers.
A novel scheme is proposed to generate an isolated monocycle x-ray pulse in free-electron lasers, which is based on coherent emission from a chirped microbunch passing through a strongly tapered undulator. In this scheme, the pulse lengthening by optical slippage, being intrinsic to the lasing process of free-electron lasers, can be effectively suppressed through destructive interference of ele...
